Getting Started with the MLLI on Sunday
Greetings to all Music Learning Leadership Institute participants!
Many have asked, What exactly do we have to do to be prepared for the Institute?
My answer is that teams already engaged in the MIENC Laboratory School Network have already prepared digital portfolios, school reports, and MLL Seminar PowerPoint presentations. These resources will all be available throughout the conference in the MLL Sourcebook to aid in planning for next year’s MLL initiatives. For first timers, we ask that you open up to these resources as we venture through the resources and events throughout the week.
I do think that how we all get started on Sunday will be very important to the success of the Institute. So please read the following paragraphs carefully so we all begin on equal footing no matter what our previous engagement with the Consortium has been.
Music Learning Leadership Orientation Processes
On Sunday we gather after registration and a technology orientation with Randy Wong (2:00-5:00 PM), an icebreaker social hour with participants from the two parallel conferences (5:00-5:50 PM), dinner (6-6:30), and to have our opening discussion of the idea and value of what we are now calling Music Learning Leadership with Vincent Marron (6:40-8:00 PM).
What do we mean by Music Learning Leadership? Why do we need distributed, layered team leadership in schools to formulate and sustain Music Plus Music Integration in Schools? Why do we need parents, guided interns, teaching artists, music specialists, classroom teachers, administrators, and ‘guided practice consultants’ all involved in the process of music learning leadership?
To get started with this discussion we will begin to explore these questions together by discussing a case study article “Liberating the Schoolhouse” by Wolford Wilson, an article suggested by Mark Slavkin of the LA Music Center.
Here’s how to prepare for this discussion and to get up to speed with the MIENC Digital Portfolio System that we will use throughout the week:
Before Sunday night, first read “Liberating the Schoolhouse” article. Then use the attached document MLL Individual Web Process Portfolio (abbreviated IWPP) Journal Format to record your selected quotations and comments about the article as instructed.
Also get a preview of Vincent’s responses to the article for your reference AFTER you have read the article and completed your reflections on the article (and perhaps peeked at the comments that follow the article).
Additional resource documents from Vincent Marron [5 “A Matter of Culture,”], [6 “Executive Summary of A+ Schools Program: Schools That Work for Everyone”], and the article from Principal Leadership [7 “Why is Mona Lisa Smiling”] will be available from the MLL Web Sourcebook once you arrive on Sunday.
By completing these procedures as best you can by Sunday night, we will all be better prepared to venture into the ongoing discussion on Music Learning Leadership topics throughout the week, PLUS you will have initiated your personal and team portfolio process as well!
[P.S., As you will see from the revised agenda to be sent shortly, David Dik’s discussion of Music Learning Leadership topics related to the MOG LLSN initiatives will happen on Monday.
